I remember Brenda, a co-worker from downtown Campbell, CA, over ten years ago. She claims to be a practicing witch and placed her orange fruit underneath the bottom left-hand corner of the computer monitor.
She had a little Sheltie dog, was married to Noel and wanted to have kids but seemed to have a hard time. One day she came in with her husband and showed me her two arthroscopic wounds to find out if her women parts were functioning normally.
Now I wasn’t too comfortable having two people who were fans of the Oakland Raiders and all decked out like thugs, coming into the office after her surgery. Even the boss knew something was up. I work alone better.
There was a mis-communication at work and one thing lead to another. Brenda asked if I could drive her to work and I actually picked her up at her home. But my boss knew something was up. I was clueless.
It was because she was losing her job. And for whatever reason, the boss had to get rid of her. I could hear the boss raising her voice at the poor fat one from the closed doors to the office.
And both went to the HR Dept., which was made up of one old lady, Sarah. After that, Brenda packed up her stuff, including the rotting orange of slightly colored brown and into a boxed container.
The supervisor Lynn was standing nearby as was procedure to make sure the fat one left properly. I was still clueless and asked Lynn all sorts of questions about work and thought everything will be fine.
But that was not to be; for Brenda retaliated by scratching the green-colored car of the boss. The term is ‘keyed’ and a long one was reported to me by the clueless boss. I told her that Brenda is the only one capable of doing that deed along the whole side of the car.
While still being clueless, I had used Brenda as a reference before the incident transpired. And she gave me good support. But for whatever reason, I remembered tonight about not returning one of her references – my bad!
And her husband left a message or two on my answering machine to return the reference calls, which I never did for fear of saying all sorts of goofs. I was not even a supervisor but a mere peer.
Of course, this is karma. For I too cannot seem to get a job now. Anyway, she like some many before and after her is one of many spooks that have presented themselves in my life.
I did recall a couple of guys in a white pick-up truck drive up to the ‘left’ side of that brick building (or to my right side of my desk) and took a quick photograph through the window of the second floor!
I saw the flash go off out of the corner of my eye. Then they sped off towards the main road, leaving a wake of dust from the gravel, which lined the area between the building and the railroad.
While I missed the downtown cafes, restaurants and ‘campbellcoffe’ scene, I really missed working with them and my first ‘real’ job but knew it was time for me to go. The boss stayed as long as we worked.
But she wanted to leave a few months earlier and did right after I left, thinking it’s ‘safer’ for her and her crew. I left my ‘second’ real job for the same reason: It was ‘safer’ without me. I was being followed the whole time.
