Maw just finished talking to a relative, who called long-distance from the Philippines. I don’t know the caller but know her as the wife of my maternal first cousin.
Of course, its a rare but thoughtful call from those who think of us here in the U.S. We’ve gotten two other long-distance phone calls, both of whom are responsible, working folks just like tonight’s caller. People without money don’t call long-distance.
Anyway, it’s mostly gossip about my first cousin who got lots of money from a house sold or rather from a loan to keep the lad from burning down the house to his deceased parents.
To keep the long story short, he bought a ‘mansion’, bragged among his ‘bayan‘ (or town folks) about his wind-fall gain, ran out of the money ill-gotten and is borrowing money — all in a span of one-year.
And he’s coming back in June next month. Hopefully he doesn’t come over or else we will have to make noise too. And if he makes trouble with us, we have nothing to do with this show off.
This black sheep is trouble of over there and definitely over here. He has a history, too. He’s married and divorced twice and has one child each from both wives. He inherited two more children from the second wife, who is GAY!
Most Filipinos here have told us horror stories about how ungrateful relatives make up all sorts of stories, call long distance and beg for money. The worse happen to self lots of lands that do not belong to them. Philippines is full of corrupt people.
For those living there and claiming that islanders are hospitable, they’re only nice because the visitors have money to spend and hopefully for their kind hosts. And if honestly, visitors are treated like nothing without money.
Sounds familiar? Well, for those who realize why people are not being generous nowadays is because being charitable to ungrateful people is akin to wasteful spending like the government.
Maw told the caller that the state of California is bankrupt, her pension might be affected and IOUs might be issued. This is not to scare the caller but to stop bad behavior of fooling those who worked hard for the money.
So the best thing to do is: save as much money from your own hard-work and don’t spend more than you can afford because no-one will help when you fall down in hard times.
