Here is an image titled: “Audiogram of Familiar Sounds”. It graphs “Hearing Level In Decibles (dB)” vertically and “Frequency In Cycles Per Second (HZ) horizontally. The range for deafness are Profound (bottom), Severe, Moderate, Mild and Normal (top).
As you can see, I have a “Severe” hearing loss around the 8000 HZ range but still have some Normal hearing left in the 125 HZ range. This means I cannot hear crispy, clear sounds on the higher frequency and have to guess some words in content by reading lips.
Bill said that I learned to associate missing words visually and tend to be impatient with people who don’t respond to me fast enough because I could almost/always guess what they would be saying next. I cannot understand people without looking at their faces and lips.
Now that I have my hearing aid, the learning process of the brain will switch from more visual to more audio. And that would take time. Perhaps I should study American sign language and work with disabled people. Hmm. I could use my hands more and don’t have to talk straight but mumble some words!
