BUSINESS IN SHADOW OF BRIBERY
Despite President Dmitry Medvedev’s recent pledge to crack down on corruption, legal experts and overseas business advisers say it’s not surprising that a Russian government contract is at the center of a bribery investigation targeting Hewlett-Packard managers in Europe. Could HP executives be held liable in Russia investigation?”It’s extraordinarily difficult to avoid demands for bribes in Russia,” said Alexandra “
Here are a few snippets (in general, of course) that needs to be addressed by Obama and pals:
`The payments allegedly were made through middlemen and shell companies that submitted seemingly legitimate invoices.`
`[Any] company could still be liable under a U.S. law known as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The law prohibits U.S. corporations, or their representatives, from paying bribes to foreign officials.`
`Overseas corruption is a particular concern […] that have factories and suppliers in Asia and sales operations around the world [and] draws much of its revenue from outside the United States.`
`Still overseas business experts say demands for bribes […] particularly in developing countries.`
Obviously, there is no oversight on the TARP either. Where is the ethical issue then and there? Hmmm. I didn’t even know what a `graft` was or how it was spelled until now. I thought that word was spelled as `draft`! You know, like draft root beer? Sheesh.
