Memory lapses occur in old people. There are three people whom I know that had problems with their recollection: Maw, Raquel and “Minh”. Bringing up data from their memories is a slow process. Usually the long-term memories are intact; while the short-term ones don’t last longer than the IMMEDIATE activity.
1. Maw was using the masking tape to remove lint from my stretchable black pants, which I used during Wednesday’s Seder dinner. I had washed those pants and ironed them, too. She asked me almost six times if I had ironed my pair of pants. I replied in the affirmative each time.
2. After evening mass that evening, we talked with Carolyn and Claire, who reported that her grandmother, Raquel, kept asking her if she went to school. The old lady asked almost fifteen times.
3. We also encountered “Minh”, whom we offered a ride home after mass this evening. I motioned to Ben her husband that I’ll be driving his wife home. He motioned back in the affirmative. While waiting in her drive-way, we noticed that she forgot to lower the lid to the access box of the electric garage. Maw noticed and instructed me to help her out.
So you see folks: Although you may be young and rebellious, you will all end up old like the rest of us. An ego is only as good as its memory. And when dementia sets in, it’s really sad to witness. Bruhaha!
