Usually, the thre of us remember our dead relatives and that’s what we did today – by visiting their graves, placing flowers, and offering prayers.
After attending morning mass with the hopelessly insane but faithful worshipers, we went to Safeway to buy flowers. But the red dozen roses for $9.99 were sold out. We bought 20-$2/10 corns and 2 bunches of flowers of yellow daisies and roses for $9.99. Then we ate breakfast at McDs and headed off to the graves: Uncle Florene and Auntie Hely; Lolo and Lola; Alberto and Kevin Jay. I took pictures as proof. We learned from two old Filipino ladies that Nalen came with her gray/white toy dog to the gravesite, finally. (It must have been an old photo showing Paw in his military cap via my Facebook.)
As for the three-day holiday and Memorial Day being on Monday, today, it is appropriate to make this time of the year to remember the dead, especially when there are so many to remember. However, people take advantage of this holiday to celebrate life and go on vacations, to move on and to leave the past behinds; deny that death is not going to happen to them until later on in life; and forget where they came from – dirt. So the meaning of the holiday is somewhat diluted because some people don’t care about respect and fail to connect with their late beloved.
