From reading Allafrica.com off and on, I’ve learned that “hostage taking” can be a profitable business model, though terrifying to the hostages, of course. Usually the hostages are freed but some die.
Another thought occurred to me from my economics class in college long ago. It has something to do with supply and demand of gas/oil. By controlling the flow of oil, even by dumping the alleged “excess” inventory into the ocean, the price of this commodity can be jacked up for profit!
Further some of these hostages are foreigners, meaning they have been recruited from poor countries, such as the Philippines. I don’t know in this case if there are Filipinos. For example, my first cousin worked under extreme conditions in Saudi Arabia but at least he got paid money.
So while it is good that the hostages are freed, it is unfortunate these “terrors” hold people hostage and died. I learned that the people of their respective country which contain the energy-rich resources are cheated by TBTP and still live in poverty.
I wonder what the security is like for other places in Africa where foreigners work.
