Luke 16:13 (International Standard Version ©2008)
“13“No servant can serve two masters, because either he will hate one and love the other, or be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and wealth!””
Well, I disagree with not being able to serve both sides of the same coin. Since we live in a world where money is essential for basic necessities in life (like food, clothing and shelter), there is no way to serve ‘God’ and not hearing the cries of the poor without some ‘wealth’.
Tonight, I have learned that the Asian attitude is the responsibility of the person, who can afford, to provide the support for the poorer relatives. This explains why most Filipinos appear ungrateful, not properly thanking the party offering their hard earned pennies.
I’ve heard this type of thinking was very wrong for those who worked so hard to earn a living. This is because when the rainy days come, the generous ones who have fallen on hard times cannot seem to find help from the very persons, who ‘took’ the money and ran.
I’ve also learned that some Filipinos like to dress well and impress each other about their accomplishments, like owning many real properties or holding positions as an officer in politics or the military.
Most Filipinos who came to America worked as fruit pickers. Some served in the military and stayed away from their family for several months at a time.
Those who didn’t go through these hardships do not understand tears cannot be shed or appreciations offered in recognition for those who seek to impress. Their bragging is empty. For they have forgotten the value of humility.
I have learned too that the ones who appear dressy and have very bad attitudes are ugly to my eyes. I know a couple of parishioners, who recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary over the weekends. They hardly greet people. They, unfortunately, do not donate well despite their image of being snotty.
For those who dress way down during mass, they are especially generous. I do not understand why those without much discernment do not read my blogs well enough to learn how to use their observations as a tool to find out who is naughty or nice.
The stories are real for I, too, am a star witness to life’s drama. My own family and relatives have taught me to take care of myself because noone else will. Noone else has enough energy or time to take care of both self and others. This is what I fail to understand.
