When is garbage and recycling collection for holidays in San Jose, CA?

Problem: Do holidays affect garbage and recycling collection?

Solution:

Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day are the only holidays that garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings are not collected in the City of San José. When these holidays occur Monday through Friday, collection will be one day later throughout the rest of that week.

Example: If Christmas Day falls on a Thursday, there is no collection, and Thursday curbside collection is done on Friday & Friday curbside collection is done on Saturday.

Here is my handy-dandy breakdown for curbside “pick-ups” when holiday “put-outs” fall on Monday through Friday, respectively:

  • Monday put-out; no collection Tuesday; Wednesday pick-up.
  • Tuesday put-out; no collection Wednesday; Thursday pick-up.
  • Wednesday put-out; no collection Thursday; Friday pick-up.
  • Thursday put-out; no collection Friday; Saturday pick-up.
  • Friday put-out; no collection Saturday; Sunday pick-up.
