I easily get bored with appearances and expect the smart engineers to make the WP.com sidebar look pretty to my eyes. Optional page appearance is useful for those with slower connections and for those with visual sensitivities, such as flashes, shocks or plug-ins, including hypnotic circulars. Those hurt the eyes and brain, too!
