This year we had only thirty-seven trick or treaters. Last year was over seventy. I suppose the kids have grown up. For some odd reason, my thoughts were heard again. After finishing playing piano from 06:30PM to 08:00PM, eating dinner at 08:30PM and while dancing afterward, the thirty-third person to receive candy was a young blue-eyed boy with his white pillow case as his barely container.
This was around 09:00PM after ‘Kali-Maw’ showed the little boy the white doorbell he missed to press. I was all smiles to the left of ‘Kali-Maw’, pointed and described the dwindling candies left in our plastic, food storage containers.
The thirty-forth person (who asked for chocolate ‘Recess’ peanut butter cups as his favorite from ‘Kali-Maw’) was the little boy’s dad. This guy, like his child, had striking blue eyes. He had placed himself at front entrance and filled the area with the wife barely peeking from behind his right shoulder.
I smiled and waved at her, too, and for some reason I wouldn’t stop waving at him with my left hand. We couldn’t stop staring at each other and I suppose it was because I kept repeating ‘eyeballs’ or ‘balls’ of chocolate candy earlier as one the selection for his child. This was a weird moment but quite refreshing to see people this late in the night.
They left and later on around 09:10PM they came back from the right side of the street with the dad directing the twosome to hurry across the nearest intersection to our left. Due to no cement divider but some light gravel, this road is also wide enough for a small plane to make an emergency landing and .
This road was busy with cars coming from the east and towards the railroad intersection to the west. They had to veer to the right of our smaller street to avoid being in the way of an oncoming white vehicle making a right into our street.
As they made their way from the orange street light next to the house across from us, I closed my eyes and sent them protection. I saw they were hoping happily eastward as they continued on the sidewalk on the other side of the road.
