Weekly Writing Challenge: Distractions

SMARTPHONES: BLESSING OR CURSE?

Disclaimer: Read no further than the first sentence. For you see, I’m an amateur writer. You will save yourselves the displeasure by moving on to better blogs. Thank you.

Smartphones are both a blessing and a curse. The internet has provided a vehicle for people to connect, for businesses to thrive, and for faster information sharing, which at times could become a problem with the ongoing privacy compromised by hackers and other groups that causes fears with uncensored/declassified material, that when misused/abused could potentially be dangerous in the wrong hands.

For example, smartphones allow me to communicate better through written words since my verbal skills are so poor. I’m able to express myself clearer through emails, text messages, and other social networking apps. By writing down my thoughts, there won’t be any second guessing as to what I meant to say, which unfortunately and recently was misconstrued as being “flippant”. But communicating with a person directly is by far much faster.

However, having a smartphone is expensive, a time-waster, and unhealthy. I personally found that paying almost $100 a month is not worth the service. And once I got this device, I couldn’t put it down since day one. This new addiction has affected my ability to remember details without my “notebook pad”, to function without the distraction of updates and feeds, and to live normally without the potential for damage by radiant energy coming from the phone itself.

Truly, the price for this advanced technology of smartphone and the internet has ruined my focus in life and my ability to interact with other humans. No longer do I appreciate the outdoors and overall beauty of nature. I have lost sight of what is important – the living, growing, nurturing and caring of life, relationships, plants, animals, and the love on NOT simply letting the “idea” of connecting my visions and goals in “life” fall through inanimate objects of computers and lost into virtual space of data centers.

Keeping the mind busy at all times is NOT a game and definitely NOT worth the distraction, especially when driving behind the wheel. The results of a mere second or two while texting on the road in a moving vehicle can be quite devastating, even deadly. The trap of this successful temptation has been set and millions of people don’t understand that a toy such as the smartphone must be weaned from the hands of babes.

Eventually we as a society must learn to adapt without reliance on the internet, its big brother watching/monitoring/tracking every data of almost every use, and its little sister the smartphone. How? Get a life. Step away from the computer. Don’t buy into tools that add to your already busy schedule, and go back to basics, such as writing love letters. When was the last time you wrote something meaningful, CLEAR and COHERENT in your own handwriting?

Perhaps, I could go further into this writing challenge and have our next generation take on an interest in reading historical documents and letters and compare today’s standards in writing with the formidable thinkings that created our great country over the years. I bet your “bottom dollar” that y’all won’t know the meaning to most of the archaic words of days gone by!
