Have you ever wanted more than you could chew? Well, that what I did. I ate more servings in a three course meal daily for most of my life. Why? It’s is because I have a big appetite? Yes! And I love burning my candle of life at both ends. It is because I love Mom’s home cooking? You bet! And I sometimes help her cook the meals. And during the preparation, I would find myself “tasting” the food constantly. And by the time that a meal was served, I’m already too full. But because I’m a trooper and do NOT wish to offend the “cook”, I ate a full meal!
But something happened!
Well, I went to the doctor for my regular check-up. The blood work result wasn’t that great. My cholesterol and triglyceride levels were TOO high. It’s a good thing that I didn’t have symptom of high-blood pressure or diabetes, although those two could put me on a lifetime of medication. I didn’t want to get worse or die early or stay on my statin drug forever.
So the good doctor, a light green-eyed South Asian Indian, told me to loose weight! A second opinion suggested that going a diet would bring the numbers down. She “educated” me on eating right and wrote down a few diet food that would help me loose weight – quinoa and burley wheat.
But I knew I would have failed my diet regime, had it not been for a televised commercial on NutriSystem and Maw’s encouragement to try out the food. So the following day of the appointment, I ordered online and within a few days. I got the BIG box of packaged food.
I loved the convenience of selecting my SMALLER portioned food four times a day; since I really don’t know how to cook “fresh meals” and don’t have the patience to slave over the burning stove. Honestly, the taste was good and easy to prepare with only boiling or microwaving as the cooking instructions!
And within the first week, I lost ten pounds of crud and maybe water through mostly sweat because of the hot summer season! I felt great and motivated enough to exercise everyday! I found myself cramping and sweating as indication that I’m on the correct path to reaching my goal.
Fast forward after Memorial Day to Labor Day I’ve lost over 20 pounds! That must be a good sign! And the symptoms of feeling sleepy and sluggish and having a difficult time sleeping and pooping seemed to have gone away. I had more energy and my once LARGE-sized clothes were so loose that Maw had to fix my camp shirts. I had to buy new clothes that were smaller in size.
Now I’m getting lazy again and my old appetite is returning. Why? Because I’m still living at home with two old farts whose diet has changed very little over many years. That’s why I invested 13 slong years ago – so I could move out and “get a life”. Did y’all think I was doing it for to bail your butts out of jail and other financial woes? Nope. It was ALL ABOUT ME.
And that’s another diet worth pursuing – to stop taking care of others and worry about myself and my future. Thank you.
