Scene: A bunch of co-workers (white and other types) seated at a restaurant for a meal long ago.
Boy: Hey! Did you know my mother was from Austria? You know, the country located just south of Germany?
Friend: No! Really? But you are Filipino? Actually, you look Chinese. But that’s besides the point. How is that so?
Boy: I’m just kidding. It was once her middle name before she got married. Bless her kindred soul. May she rest in peace.

Fely survived WWII. She and her family escaped the onslaught of the Japanese shooting/killing the Filipino people.
“The heads of the enemies were cut off and lined up along this bridge. The survivors spat on the heads.”
“My brother didn’t make it. He was coming home from working in the fields. We never saw him again.”
Fely was only five years old – too young to remember the hardships of her people but not too young to remember sleeping in the fox holes with mosquito nets protecting them and hearing the bullets being fired overhead/everywhere.

Most Filipinos, including Vietnamese and Chinese, have started new lives in America, the land of opportunity. Most Filipinos were poor and worked as fruit/vegetables pickers. Some educated ones were lucky to have been sponsored to work and are successful and own homes of their own. Others were once wealthy and lost their businesses, mansions. and lands to the Communist governments. Now some of them have small business and work as beauty technicians. America is the home of the free. Don’t forget that, okay?
