People are definitely too dependent on technology.
After the photo shoot for a parish directory done on Tuesday evening, the three of us spoke with a representative from Olan Mills on our order for five framed photos for our home. He was Chinese. And he explained that his education back home required rigorous training — the hard way. They were taught to use their minds to calculate figures and not rely on the scientific calculator. He even sent his son to study back home in the hopes of learning how to use his mind.
Maw compared herself to me. The other day, we needed to come up with a quick figure. In a few second, she came up with the answer. She didn’t use any calculator. On the other hand, I fumbled with my Android cellphone in hand: it took me a long time to come up with the same answer — draw a pattern to unlock, select the calculator application, enter figures into the screen and acquire answers in error!
Anyone, who disagrees with people relying heavily on technology, must be from the manufacturing, agricultural and other industrial sectors that rely on heavy machinery to get the job done. In this case, I would disagree: we definitely need machines to help us thrive as an advanced and civilised society. The point I made earlier is the training necessary by using the mind, pen and paper. After all, when there is no electricity, what would happen? It’s back to basics — the mind. Get it?
