It its one thing being nice. But it is another thing being a caretaker. Of course, the ones being paid have a duty. But what of family members? To my left is an elderly Asian couple, the stronger it the wife. She took the walker of the old man and stuffed it in the white van; while he wasn’t even close to the passenger side of the door, which was still closed. He shuffled slowly to the door and got in by himself. I can sense great patience from the old woman. Call it love. I call it tolerance but out of frustration, she can only be there for the old man, who is hunched forward.
Take yesterday. Because I heard more spew from downstairs, I said some mean things from upstairs by myself and rather loudly. And mysteriously the old woman might have heard my blatherings. She was already upset for MOST of her life, especially the past week or so and probably is crashing from her asthma treatment, a last resort and step-down method. So since last night, she said to me: “I don’t need your help! From now on, I’ll do it myself! You’re mean.”
Gee, now you know where I got my meanstreak, mostly from her. Oh, and don’t even mention the bad DNA from both sides. No, she said yesterday, each person can overcome bad breeding. Really? As a “nicer” of two evil children, she has no choice but to lean on her old man, who is not much help either. With her pituitary tumor acting up (from rubbing her forehead to leaning weakly on her left arm while eating), I can do nothing for her but pray and wait.
