Original Filipino lyrics to “Anak” by Freddie Aguilar :
Noong isilang ka sa mundong ito
Laking tuwa ng magulang mo
At ang kamay nila ang iyong ilaw
At ang nanay at tatay mo’y
Di malaman ang gagawin
Minamasdan pati pagtulog mo
Nais mo’y maging malaya
Di man sila payag
Walang magagawa
Nalaman mong ika’y nagkamali
Nagsisisi at sa isip mo’y
Nalaman mong ika’y nagkamali
Nagsisisi at sa isip mo’y
Nalaman mong ika’y nagkamali…
Really horrible Filipino to English translation:
Was born into this world
Sized delight of parents
And hand them your light
And thy mother and father
Do not know
Watching as you sleep
And your mother tonight napupuyat
Milk with tea you
And in the morning you come over cradled
Your father excited youNow that is great you
Thy would be free
Not whether they are willing
Stalemate
You then suddenly changed
Became stubbornAnd the advice you bring forth violated
Do not you ever just thought
Their ginagawa’y for you
Cause is desired
You fling
You do not ignore themRetrospective more days
And lost thy paths
You are addicted to the bad habit
And first approached
Your mother weeps
And the question, “son, they must”
And your eyes suddenly shed in your notice
Repent and thy mind
You find you are wrong
Repent and thy mind
You find you are wrong
Repent and thy mind
You find you are wrong …
Happy Birthday Mom!
Earlier this evening during dinner, Mom and I cried while listening to this song via her son’s smartphone. While she was translating the original Tagalog Version in English, something deeply profound touched me. Tears wouldn’t stop while I ate the guest’s sticky rice. We’d wipe away our tears but mine continued until the end. I am still crying after listening to the English Version a few minutes ago. There is also a Japanese Version and a Cantonese Version of this song. “Anak” is a Malayasian word for “Child”.
