20071206-Internet Disconnection

I thought to myself over the weekends: I wanted to disconnect from the computer and internet once and for all and get a real life. I needed to find out how I could take being away from these electronic devices. I’ll admit that I am addicted to the internet, my new television.

For three days now, I’ve been unable to connect to the internet. The browsing on the internet has come to a complete halt! There I was trying to get logged back into the window to my outside world. I couldn’t access my email or search for ‘free’ data on how to remedy my computer problem.

To my dismay, I know I’d had to call for outside help. I tried texting ‘Squirrel’ from my cellphone many times on Monday afternoon and lots more on Tuesday. I called his home and left messages since he simply would not answer his cellphone. I cannot hate my own flesh and blood for his not responding to my calls for help. But I have learned that he is truly like ‘Paw’ — f&ck*ng selfish b@st@ards.

I tried: turning off and on the computer, the modem, the router; unplugging the DSL filter and all the other connections; and kept on clicking on ‘Repair’ for resetting my IP address. Nothing was processing normally. And I was getting desperate for some sign of hope and prayed to the equipment to work. But my prayers have gone unanswered because these objects are inanimate and will not do my bidding to work properly.

So yesterday afternoon on Tueday, 12/04/2007 and at around 05:30PM, I called the ATT High Speed Internet Services at the 1-877 phone numbers, which appears on the phone bill of ‘Paw’. I got ‘Jack’ as a tech support. He sounded from India with his slight accent but clear enough English.

‘Jack’ told me to that I could get back online after 07:30PM. And after eating dinner and exercising indoors to that dancing-aerobic tape, I ran upstairs around 08:00PM. I found out that the connection still was not working!

So I called again and got another tech support who transferred my phone call to another tech support in the ‘maintenance’ department. There would have been a $50.00 charge to have someone ‘go out’ and check the problem, if the discovery happens to be the problem from the inside wiring of the property. So on Wednesday, 12/05/2007 between 12:00PM to 04:00PM, ‘Jason’ found the problem was the wiring of the rely boxes of our streets.

I kept in contact with my parental units while at work via my cellphone because I still don’t have a desk or phone to use (thank goodness). ‘Maw’ told ‘Jason’ that the problem has been the same – the outside wiring. She told him that the police came over one time when they thought I was playing around with the 9-1-1 dialing. (I told the Gestapo and his newbie Asian assistant to back off because I already reported the incident to the phone company. This was a years ago, though.)

One should not be impatient with customer service representatives. Being nasty over the phone only complicates any matter and makes both sides of the phone more irate. I kept my cool the whole time as the tech supports were supportive with their responses in kind – ‘Okay. Not a problem. Thank you.’

Much of my knowledge of supporting desktop issues is limited and has been learned by experience: from observing ‘Squirrel’ and others and retaining as much information as possible (in case I would need this for my own future use). My computer background does help when on the phone with the ATT Yahoo! tech support.

Tonight after talking with three tech supports of ATT Yahoo! from 05:30PM to 06:50PM tonight and obtaining my case (reference) numbers for my records, I was able to browse my favorite forum feeds and found to my dismay people are still doing their own things. My emails are still empty as heck. And there is nothing new in the news.

I should read more books instead. But that is more difficult for someone like me who has been on the computer for over ten years. It’s like trying to tell a drug addict, an alcoholic or a smoker to stop cold turkey. The feeling of not being in front of the computer and not online left me quite stunned.
