Tag: theme

  • 20100828-Tweaking Again

Last night I had to remove two widgets, namely `Categories` and `Tags` – both of which serve the same purpose. Only the `Tags` widget doesn’t have a drop-down menu list; whereas the `Categories` widget allows for hierarchy.

For the sake of tracking how many posts I have published, I’ll just leave `rant` as a category all by itself. It doesn’t make sense to use the `QuickPost` feature when there is no `category` field to fill out but a `tag` in its place.

As a result, I was looking around for another WordPress.com theme to use and tweak my paid CSS upgrade. I feel it’s the appearance that is, well, too BORING. I like the `automatic width` adjustment for any screen resolution and/or web page zoom feature.

    I just don’t like sameness.

Oh, boy! This time I’ve changed the WordPress.com theme to `Tarski by Benedict Eastaugh and Chris Sternal-Johnson` again.

It’s cleaner and sports a colorful Christmas background with the WordPress.com logo. The less images on the sidebar, the faster the load time for users with slower internet connections.

The sidebar shows only the `Blogroll` links with someone’s site towards the top of the list. There is an RSS feed above and a Search bar below the `Blogroll` links.

I used to care if there is a time stamp or not but now no more. The RSS feed should take care of the approximate time when my post entries were made.

I used to care if there is a drop-down navigation bar or not but it soon became noticeably redundant on the sidebar widget as either `main menu` or `pages`.

You will notice that there are only two top-level, navigation bar selections: `Home` (for blogs) and `Contents` (for pages). Again, it’s cleaner with only four sections and logically laid-out based on the WordPress.com Dashboard: Posts, Links, Media and Pages. All the pages are links from this one `Contents` page.

I’ve been trying to get ideas on how sites grace the `Freshly Press` page. I know the weblog contents MUST be crispy and clean in order to make the list. I know that mine is still full of unresolved issues, rants and such. Brouhaha!

I’ve got four registered weblogs with WordPress.com, one with Blogger.com and one with Plinky.com. For the past couple of hours, I’ve made changes to the `Blog/site titles` and `Taglines` of my WordPress.com weblogs. Two weblogs are updated almost daily. The other two are `static pages` – just sitting there and waiting for nothing.

    • Weblog by Flynn – Alternative topics and other rants.
    • Living with Orgone – Your daily champion of gifting and healing the environment.
    • Paws for Thoth – Once upon a brief pause and a long break.
    • Weblogger’s World – Your daily champion of ranting and raving about everything.

I can’t stand the domain name! It looks like a crustacian – LOBSTER or BLOBSTER – instead of a gangster! I’m not feeling like a thug but flowery. To Matt and pals: Could I apply a `refund` for an UGLY domain name towards `flynnsblog.com` as an extra year, giving it two years? That’s burger money you know.

I had to change the Blog/Site title back to a singular form as `Flynn’s Blog`. It doesn’t feel the same, though. I changed the WordPress.com theme again: This time it’s `Theme: DePo Masthead by Derek Powazek.` I’m never a satisfied blogger. Something has got to be done, like take some coding classes! To Matt and pals: I want to take a WordPress.com class! Sign me up!

As per yesterday’s comment by Antjie, I’ve decided to change the `theme option` from `Light` to `Dark` because it’s supposed to be easier to read than my `gray background` against light fonts.

  • Private Domains

I came across the newest WordPress.com article titled : Protect your Privacy with Private Domain Registrations. Now, I’d like use my old ones but couldn’t because one is taken and the site looks nice! The other one is registered elsewhere.

I sent the WordPress.com support team about these two issues. And after re-reading the article, it appears I won’t be able to use the old domains. I’ll have to think of something fancy, something different, something that will make people want to come back for more.

Yeah, right. Then that means I’ll have to pay for a CSS upgrade. One can’t have a nice domain name and not have have a different theme, tweaked to one’s desires. I know: I’ve tried hundreds of times to perfect my ideal `site` but couldn’t find satisfaction.

In the meantime, I’ll meditate upon a domain name. Something will surely manifest from deep within my small mind. Hmmm, definitely not cheeseburgers.

  • 20100724-Tweaking Again

I’ve been changing WordPress.com themes again for my three registered weblog sites:

    • Flynn’s Blogs – Alternative Topics and Rants is trying Solipus theme.
    • Flynn’s Orgone – Just Another Orgone Resource is trying 2010 default theme.
    • Flynn’s Paws – Plinky Prompts and Answers is trying Vostok theme.

So take a look or I’ll be unhappy. Nah. You don’t have to. It’s okay. Not it’s not. Yes, it is. Whatever. Anyway, Earlier this month or so, I’ve received a notice stating that one of my domain name has expired. I didn’t care because I didn’t have the means. I don’t even know how to get it back either. I’m not that smart and UGLY, too! Waahh!

Oh, and I couldn’t resist changing certain blog titles back to its original format of date following by a dash. This would include the most common ones, such as `more spooks`, `weathery ways`, `trying themes`, `tweaking again`, `noticing numbers`, etc. So that the price of blogging  – always editing – adding and deleting.

I’ve saved the following via my Dashboard >>:

    `Discussion Settings`

    • Unclicked `Automatically close comments on articles older than […] days`
    • Removed data from `Comment Moderation`.
      • When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be held in the moderation queue. One word or IP per line. It will match inside words, so “press” will match “WordPress”.
    • Removed data from `Comment Blacklist`.
      • When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be marked as spam. One word or IP per line. It will match inside words, so “press” will match “WordPress”.

    `Ratings Settings`

    • Enable for blog post.
    • Enable for front page.
    • Enable for pages.
    • Enable for comments.

All ratings set `Above each posts`.

Well, this time I’m trying the newest WordPress.com theme:

    Andrea by Lucian E. Marin

A gorgeously minimal two-column theme with a flexible layout and an unusual blue color scheme.

    PROs:

    • Blog description (or tagline) to the right of blog title.
    • Top navigation bar (without drop-down menus).
    • Left sidebar (default).
    • Two `Andrea Theme Options`:
      • Flexible-width Layout — Wide, flexible-width layout. Site width is fluid between a minimum width of 900px and maximum width of 1200px. Images in the main column have a maximum width of 1000px.
      • Fixed-width Layout — Narrow, fixed-width layout. Site width is 700px and the main column width is 500px. Images in the main column have a maximum width of 500px.
    • Custom header images of exactlly 1190 x 250 pixels, with optional header text.
    • Custom background images, with display options (positions, repeats, attachments, color). Here is a sample of the background from WallpaperStock.net:

    CONs:

    • No time stamp! I want time stamps! I love time stamps! Waahh!

Well, I’ve switched WordPress.com theme again and it’s back to `The Journalist v1.9 by Lucian E. Marin` because of the unique page features for `Archives` and `Links`. I had to edit my paid CSS upgrade again. Why?

After viewing Mew’s new WordPress.org theme, the inspiration to get my own background lead me to a `White Beach Desktop Wallpaper` from WallpaperStock.net because I wanted to be near some body of water.

    Here is the sample:

The colors of blues and whites seem to brighten my blogging experience and liven up the otherwise dark weblog contents as reflected in my feelings of negativity and such, thanks in part to my upbringing (nuture) and DNA (nature).

But after listening to a couple of guitar tunes by my favorite author (?), I feeling better. I’m not sure how to download the tunes either. But it was worth the few minutes of trouble while tweaking my weblog.
