  • Navigation Menus

    20220919-1335.

    I still do NOT understand what happened to my Navigation Menu.

    While in the Edit Navigation Menu section, I noticed what appeared to be duplicates which I deleted – in error!

    I had two static pages: one for our favorite messengers and one for my other WordPress sites.

    Little did I realize that I had deleted the navigation menu, which I inserted INSIDE the static page!

    That’s a no-no because whenever I would click on a navigation menu link located both in the header and footer, the static pages would be blank!

    I had to delete the navigation block because I already deleted that menu earlier.

    Then I had to insert a Paragraph block and then copy/paste a “list” of links from my other site into this primary site. And then I saved both static pages.

    So now when I click into the Our Favorite Messenger page and myFlynnsBlogs sites page, I can see the unordered list of external links that I copied/pasted/saved earlier.

    I see now the errors of my ways! The Active Theme “Seedlet (Blocks)” does NOT have its own Menu creation section! But other themes have that feature.

    To be safer, I’d copy and paste external blogroll links into a Post or a Page instead of using the Navigation block, which like I said, can be deleted in error; because the menus were named the same – and that created the confusion!

    I’m learning simple stuff along the way but at the same time I’m messing up, too!

  • Six pages left..

    So after doing the yard work and after four hours of blogging, I’ve reduced my static pages to only six:

    The decision to create a new “Main Menu” was made out of frustration. I needed to streamline my blog. And so the old pages were moved to posts, which I could tag and attach images! Besides, the sidebar widgets will pick up the Archives, Links and other pages I’ve deleted, like Stats. I am hoping for more SHORTCODES!

  • Less published pages…

    In an effort to reduce my pages (its history and my headaches), I am down to eighteen published pages. There really should be only four PARENT pages, which are in upper case/capital letters and are part of my global/top/main navigation/bar/menu: POSTS, PAGES, ARCHIVES, and LINKS.

    The last two templates (thanks to the theme designer) really encouraged/helped me to reduce the clutter of my bottom/sidebar widgets and extra pages, which no one or myself would have the time to read.

    So the fifth PARENT page has nine children and four grandchildren, which are TOO long to combine with any of the children pages.

    As such, the Pages, Archives, and Links look cleaner and better under Mobile Site as long as the “content” for both templates are kept be blank/clean.

  • Custom Menus

    Finally, after all these years, I’ve figured out how to get my `Main menu` (or `Pages` widget) to look almost EXACTLY like my `Contents` page!

    • Go to : Dashboard >> Appearance >> Menus.
    • Click on the `plus sign` ( + ).
    • Give your Menu a name and press Create Menu button.

    To create a custom menu, give it a name above and click Create Menu. Then choose items like pages, categories or custom links from the left column to add to this menu.

    After you have added your items, drag and drop to put them in the order you want. You can also click each item to reveal additional configuration options.

    When you have finished building your custom menu, make sure you click the Save Menu button.

    • Have fun creating menus using:
      • Custom Links.
      • Pages.
      • Categories.
      • Theme Locations (if supported by your chosen WordPress.com theme).
    • DO NOT forget to press the `Save Menu` button!!!

  • Removing Pages

    I’ve been lurking online and noticed that some links are DEAD. Right there, that gave me a clue to remove DEAD material. You will notice the blogroll links do not have any references to a particular orgone vendor. It’s time to move on folks. Stop dilly-dallying.

    Anyway, I now have four registered WordPress.com weblogs! Two have its own domain name. I’m still trying to retrieve the other two domain names because someone took my domain name `flynnsblogs.com` while the other one `flynnspaws.com` is going through a redemption period.

    Who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for words on a link? That’s food money!

  • 20091119-Two Pages

    Since the engine that drives WordPress.com does not have a feature which allows the administrator to forward or re-direct RENAMED pages to new page(s), I had to create and rename another page.

    The `http://thebloggingpath.wordpress.com/contents/` page has been set to display as my `front page`; while the “http://thebloggingpath.wordpress.com/content/` page is an old page for one referrer.

    The former page is truly a `Table of Contents`, which ends in the letter `s`. It is a plural form for a list of goodies for my readers to spend hours on end during this stupid recession, thanks to GWB, Obama and pals.

    The latter page is currently a greeting of `Howdy` for those who click on my webling from a dedicated blogger’s website. It is logically used as a `Home` page and shows a Gustave Doré illustation of Satan falling to planet Earth below. I found that image via wikimedia.org.

    This new page is supposed to let the incoming hits understand the purpose of my weblog. It’s about fate or destiny and why they have chosen to seek what they cannot find.

    So again, here are the two pages:

    Same old: `http://thebloggingpath.wordpress.com/contents/`

    Something new: `http://thebloggingpath.wordpress.com/content/`

  • 20091109-Hierarchy Headache

    I’m still trying to figure out the PERFECT order of pages to my weblog. New pages had been added and probably will increase as I continue to think of many things overlooked.

    Here are the parent* pages so far:

    • Contents (which is a `Table of Contents` or currently the `Home` or `Front` page).
    • Pages (which is the `Sitemap`).**
    • Archives (which lists ALL available shortcode archives – yearly, monthly, weekly, daily and postbypost).
    • Posts (which displays the latest (or most recent) blog entries).

    The `Contents` page is not perfect. It currently shows three sections (pages, book and posts). But logically, the sections should be only two (pages and posts) without the book. But because this current layout is modeled after `[my] daily companion` of religious readings online, the `book` section is still included.

    The `Pages` page is not perfect. This is because it is a copy of the `Page` widget listed in the numbered order** and as a result the `Contents` page is not perfected yet.

    The `Archives` is perfect. But I’m hoping team Automattic will create shortcodes for the pages, posts and sidebars:

    • Categories;
    • Links; and
    • Tags.

    The `Posts` page is perfect. It is published as a blank page and is currently set as a static `Post page` under the `options-reading.php`.

    I kept the nesting to only another level of the parent pages. This decision is based on the fact that the sidebar widget is NARROW in width and looks better with no more than two levels of nested pages.

    * You can arrange your pages in hierarchies, for example you could have an “About” page that has “Life Story” and “My Dog” pages under it. There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.

    ** Pages are usually ordered alphabetically, but you can put a number above to change the order pages appear in. (We know this is a little janky, it’ll be better in future releases.)

    Added new pages from ‘Body Matter’. Can’t decide how to present in sitemap, under categories. May delete later on. Almost redundant to click on link & view page

  • 20091108-Pages Organized

    Since the `Misty` theme by Sadish is perfect (for now), there is no reason to edit my paid Custom CSS upgrade. But since the search form on the upper right hand corner crosses the top navigation bars to the left, I had to find a logical way to streamline the pages.

    Based on WordPress Mobile Edition Theme by Alex King, the three main menu selections are

    • Home;
    • Pages; and
    • Archives.

    So, I tried to model my pages in that particular order. But since this WordPress.com theme has a `Home` tab as one of the main menu selection, I’m still debating on whether to set the latest posts to display as the `Front page` or retain `Contents` as something more presentable as seen inside the front part of a typical `book`.

    The reason for creating a `Contents` page is to take the place (or hold) the position of `Home` page for some WordPress.com themes that do not have a default `Home` tab.

    As for the pages, that is straight forward. These are static and should not change.

    Unlike the pages, posts change and are presented in reverse order with the most recent entries appearing on the top of a hierarchy of older posts below. These are found under the archives.

    But I’ve created a `Posts` page as another place holder in case I can’t decide if I want the late post entries to appear in its separate page or on the `Front` (or `Home`) page instead.

  • 20091028-New Stuff

    Brouhaha! I’ve learned that expression from lurking online. And through the power that which is the almighty internet, I’ve spiced up my boring weblog due to (you guessed correctly) BOREDOM.

    Yesterday afternoon, I’ve got good news. Last night, I’ve been thinking about wiggling my toes through sand and water of the beach. This morning I thought about that unpublished book and starting a publishing company, say, Fluffy and Flynn. But I think too much.

    I think that I could be a channel for advertising my favorite subjects. So my weblog now sports more Dorkboy stuff: a new page entitle Dorkboy and an `Image widget`, featuring an orange sun with 13 sunrays.

    I found a useful quote by cbswork from one of two weblog sites by Madam Mews. I placed the same image of an orange sun from the sidebar widget to the right of the quote, which could be found on the new Dorkboy page, which is divided currently into three sections: products, photos and weblogs.

    I’ve set the front page to display my `Contents` page. As a result, I’ve removed the `main menu` widget from the sidebar. This means that the most recent (latest) posts are under the `New posts` section.

  • 20091014-Flynn’s Orgone

    Snork! I’ve reviewed my other WordPress.com site: Flynn’s Orgone. And my big brain decided what a grand idea to set the front page to display the `highlights` page, which contains:

    • Two sets of photos from users via Shareapic.net.
    • Three sets of photos from FlynnsPaws via Flickr.com.
    • Three sections for links to orgone.
    • One YouTube.com video by `dolphinbrain`.
