  • 20090806-New Theme

    I’m bored again and trying another free theme at WordPress.com:

    Unsleepable by Ben Gray

    A simple two-column theme that appeals to the monochrome amongst us.

    Tags: two-columns, fixed-width, right-sidebar, white, light, widgets, sticky-post, rtl-language-support

    PROS:

    • Subpages to my main parent pages: contents, web book, faq, about me, and contact me.
    • The `search` form always appears on the upper right hand corner.

    CONS:

    • Excerpts (summarized around 60 words) instead of full view of each entry.
    • No time/date stamps.
    • No tag-line.
    • Monotone but it’s okay because my most recent theme felt too colorful and busy.
    • Applying one widget to the `Main Sidebars` would knock out the subpages feature.

  • 20090731-Trying Theme

    Since the former theme did not have a `Links template`, I’m trying the free WordPress.com theme to:

    Kubrick by Michael Heilemann

    The default WordPress theme complete with customizable header and widgets.

    Tags: two-columns, fixed-width, custom-header, blue, right-sidebar, sticky-post, white, light, widgets

    As a result, I’ve updated the `link-manager.php` in Flynn’s Orgone with the ones from Flynn’s Blogs.

    But since I know I will change my mind later, I’ve copied the `Link` page from my other weblog site and pasted the data into my `Links` page here.

    Check it out, this time!

    I’m trying out a free WordPress.com theme – Pool by Borja Fernandez:

    A blue two column with tabbed page navigation, custom header, and widgets. Tags: custom-header, blue, two-columns, rtl-language-support, white, light, right-sidebar, widgets, sticky-post, fixed-width

    The color is based on the `Dusk` by beccary:

    A dark blue and grey two-column theme adorned with flowers. Tags: dark, fixed-width, two-columns, right-sidebar, widgets, sticky-post, rtl-language-support

    It’s got all the elements I want:

    • meta information (time/date stamp, category, tag, leave a comment and edit) all bunched up together right underneath the post entry title.
    • a global, navigation top bar towards the top
    • a search bar towards the top
    • a customer header (showing a partial image of a sylph) towards the top
    • narrow width at 780px (for smaller screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels)
    • left content with right side bar (for old cellphones viewing in text only)
    • order, unordered and listed items (disc, circle, square) appear normally
    • next and previous links work normally

    It’s only missing the tagline:

    • In memory of Fur-Rin-Duh-San! Laughed out loud and died from fun!

    Objectives:

    • Copying entries with ease.
    • Providing most recent (or latest) entries for viewing.
    • Using top navigation bar for main pages that none reads!

    Accomplishment:

    • Organized sidebars.
    • Narrowed blogroll links to just `DorkBoy` until team Automattic figures out if a ‘tree’ or dropdown menu is workable.
    • Re/move redundant page: `Recent posts` from parent to child under `Content` page.

  • 20090511-Trying Theme

    For my Flynn’s Orgone weblog site here at WordPress.com, I switched ‘The default WordPress theme complete with customizable header and widgets’ (Kubrick) to Ocean Mist by Ed Merritt.

    Its description is: ‘A blueish two-column theme with a large customizable header, visible post author, and category navigation at the bottom.’ Other feature include ‘custom header, two columns, blue, fixed width, rtl (or right table)’.

    I like this one better because the default header shows a scenic image of clouds and ocean in the background with greenery in the foreground. The header of my former theme was a gradient color of violet to indigo.

  • 20090427-Trying Theme

    Trying new WordPress.COM theme: Spring Loaded by the 449. It’s ‘A fresh, green theme with a clean layout and modern type.’ It has ‘one column, widgets, and page navigation’. As a result, I had to remove to widgets: ‘Search’ and ‘Pages’. The adjectives to describe this new theme are: ‘green, fresh, grass, and spring’.

  • 20090331-Visible Pages

    Since y’all are too busy to navigate within my fine, long-winded pages o’plenty and click on the many fine links to read MORE pages, I’ve tweaked my paid CSS Stylesheet for the ‘ChaosTheory’ theme.

    For the ‘globalnav’ section; the height is set to 60px with its ‘listed menu’ set to a padding of 5px (for top and bottom) and 15px for the sides). I really wanted to squoosh this ‘navigation bar’ towards the top and into one long strip, similar to Yahoo! News.

    But for those using screen resolutions of 800 by 600 pixels, the visual to the navigation bar was all messed up. Then again, I didn’t test the ‘height’. I should try again but I’m too lazy to find out now, maybe later on.

    Most of my [static] ‘pages’ are included within this (top) navigation bar, except the five sub-pages to the Web-Book (front stuff, front matter, body matter, back matter and back stuff) and a few set pages to ‘private’ mode.

    I expect to see some ‘hits’ based on my stats. Speaking of stats, the ‘Stats’ page has been generated with a simple push of a button called ‘Summary Tables’, which is located towards the bottom of the ‘Blog Stats’ page of my ‘Dashboard’.  It is now a visible selection of the (top) navigation bar, called ‘STATS!’

    Oh! Y’all could take my POLL. It’s a multiple selection of five, ranging from very satisfied to very dissatisfied. The results of the poll are visible to the public. So far none cares to amuse me. In other words, there are no results yet! Blah!

    Okay, I’m being a puss-head all over again and here I went ahead with switching free themes via WordPress.COM!  This time it’s Rounded by Ghyslain Armand (A brown, flexible width theme with a unique navigation and lots of flowers.)

    It has the elements that I want from the meta fields:

    • time stamp
    • date stamp
    • category
    • tag

    Unfortunately the fonts are small. But with nice web browsers such as FireFox, I could Zoom In (or Ctrl +) each time to make reading easier on more myopic eyesights such as mine.

    Instead of the ‘Front page displays’ being the ‘Welcome’ page, I selected ‘Your latest posts’ under the ‘Reading Settings’ of my Dashboard. The purpose was for those who had internet connection via cellphones. The readers could enter my URL address at http://flynnsblogs.wordpress.com/ into their web browser and find the most recent posts towards the top.

    This version is more logical since a weblog is suppose show the latest entry. And the more impatient readers will get the most up-to-date drivel from moi instead of navigating everywhere from a static page, like ‘Welcome’.

    But this meant I had to find a theme that had a navigation bar way on the top of my weblog. I looked everywhere and liked the brighter ones (with white background) but this current theme fits the bill for now because it has more colors and flowers, too!

    Another compromise that I had to bear was the one sidebar, which, thankfully, is located on the right side of the text. This means that readers using their cellphones will be able to see the blog entries right after scrolling down past the Blog Title, Tagline, Navigation bar and of course, my ‘Sticky post’ showing an illustration of Dante’s ‘Inferno’ Satan by Gustave Doré.

    So there you have my free theme. Until ‘they’ REPAY me, I cannot take computer classes, learn PHP, SQL and other weblog programming and get to work on my paid WordPress.ORG weblog site. I hate ‘TPTB’. They suck eggs big time. And people think, I’m just ranting. Behold! What’s happening now?

  • 20080918-Trying Theme

    Okay, I couldn’t help myself and went back to the ‘Quentin’ theme for free here at WordPress.COM. I tried to get used to the new ‘DePo Masthead’ theme and added the nice ‘reddish background of swirls and flowers but missed the big fonts and all the other features from this current theme of rustic browns. So once again, I’ve made more adjustments to the width and set that to 750 pixels. The auto feature stretched the words within the ‘contents’ too wide. I couldn’t figure out why there was this yellow line hanging out to the right of the ‘rap’ section and found the answer could be remedied by setting the float from ‘left’ to ‘right’. In addition, I’ve decided to add more text from my ‘blogroll’ and photos for the DB books and products, which includes the working links back to his weblog site. I’m being a booger and don’t know how many times I’ve switched themes just to make everything appear perfect. I do hope this one will last for awhile.
