Tag: sticky

Generally, the Sticky option is only used for one or two posts on a blog. It should not be used for every post.

This time I trying a new WordPress.com theme:

    Bouquet by Automattic

Bouquet is an elegant, simple theme inspired by the beauty found in flowers. Notable features include two floral schemes, a responsive layout structure that adapts to smaller devices, a right sidebar, a full-width template, support for post formats, custom background, and custom header. There are two theme options of flowery header images: Pink Dogwood a default in pink and Forget-Me-Not in blue. There is only one sidebar widget, which I won’t use for now because my “Hello Word” page, which is a “Sticky Post” will serve as the “Table of Contents” or a “Sitemap” and provides the “Archives” and “Subscription” links, too. Only five of the most recent posts are displayed. The width of the contents auto-fits for smaller screen resolutions, which reveals a time-stamp from the hover over the date.

Tonight and for $55.00 (a double-digit numerical value), I purchased a Premium Theme! That’s right! I’ve got 30 days to try out my new WordPress theme.

The layout of this theme is VERY simple. And this time I like reading SMALLER fonts. I noticed LARGER fonts make reading MUCH slower. More spaces in between lines/paragraphs and contents/sidebars tend to distract me.

The meta data  underneath the post title: “Written on [datetime stamp] by [author]” section for the ONE and ONLY excerpt found on the “index/front/home” page, followed by links for Edit, Categories, Tags and Comments section for the “single view” page.

The content is to the left of the sidebar widget. Five of my main/parent pages fit VERY nicely on the top navigation bar. But the “Site Title” feels too bulky for the small box on the upper right hand corner and on the lower left hand section of the footer. The “Search” form is located on the upper right hand corner.

The footer has the “Tagline” and default fields for RSS Posts and RSS Comments. Credit for the theme designer is given as usual here.

The most recent post entry is shown as an excerpt. The same goes for “Sticky Posts”. “Rate This” is shown on this excerpt.

“Recent Entries” show only the Post title; the meta and comments. “Recent Entries” can be changed via the “Reading Settings” of the Dashboard. A maximum of five “Recent Comments” is shown as excerpts.

    1. I’ve decided to keep the Rounded theme by Ghyslain Armand because it has all the features I wanted:

    • time/date stamp for both pages and posts
    • category/tag fields to describe my posts
    • navigation bar to draw attention to my five main pages
    • graphics of rounded, flowers and muted colors of blue and brown

    2. I’ve decided to make this theme from two columns into one column for the sake of people with screen resolutions of 800 by 600 pixels. My current screen resolution is 1024 by 768 pixels. Based on other one-column themes, do the following:

    • Set the width to 750px to the `body`, `content` and `menu`.
    • Set the width to 100% for `sideitem`.

But I had a tough time with the `masthead` and `footer`. The `header` and `masthead` sticks out a bit on either side; while the sides to the `footer` didn’t line up with my bottom bar.

    3. I’ve decided to add an scroll bar `overflow:scroll` to the `content` with a height of 625px. I wanted to add another scroll bar to the `menu` but that would take away visibility to the widgets below.

    4. By making this current theme one column, I’ve accomplished the following:

    • Retain visibility of a `Sticky post` entitled `Recent posts` to the front page with one scroll bar.
    • Allow cellphone users quick access to five menu and recent posts below.
    • Allow users better viewing with lower screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels.

But I had to set`’Blog pages show at most three posts` via `Reading Settings` under the `Dashboard`. This reduces the time scrolling and allows the reader the opportunity to click the `Next Page >>` selection located on the bottom left corner of the  post entry `content`.

So there you have my temporary satisfaction. I’m trying to find a `permanent job` to get myself of THEIR hole until next month and this would allow me some distraction away from blogging and altering the appearance to my favorite weblog site: WordPress.COM.

Okay, I’m being a puss-head all over again and here I went ahead with switching free themes via WordPress.COM!  This time it’s Rounded by Ghyslain Armand (A brown, flexible width theme with a unique navigation and lots of flowers.)

It has the elements that I want from the meta fields:

    • time stamp
    • date stamp
    • category
    • tag

Unfortunately the fonts are small. But with nice web browsers such as FireFox, I could Zoom In (or Ctrl +) each time to make reading easier on more myopic eyesights such as mine.

Instead of the ‘Front page displays’ being the ‘Welcome’ page, I selected ‘Your latest posts’ under the ‘Reading Settings’ of my Dashboard. The purpose was for those who had internet connection via cellphones. The readers could enter my URL address at http://flynnsblogs.wordpress.com/ into their web browser and find the most recent posts towards the top.

This version is more logical since a weblog is suppose show the latest entry. And the more impatient readers will get the most up-to-date drivel from moi instead of navigating everywhere from a static page, like ‘Welcome’.

But this meant I had to find a theme that had a navigation bar way on the top of my weblog. I looked everywhere and liked the brighter ones (with white background) but this current theme fits the bill for now because it has more colors and flowers, too!

Another compromise that I had to bear was the one sidebar, which, thankfully, is located on the right side of the text. This means that readers using their cellphones will be able to see the blog entries right after scrolling down past the Blog Title, Tagline, Navigation bar and of course, my ‘Sticky post’ showing an illustration of Dante’s ‘Inferno’ Satan by Gustave Doré.

So there you have my free theme. Until ‘they’ REPAY me, I cannot take computer classes, learn PHP, SQL and other weblog programming and get to work on my paid WordPress.ORG weblog site. I hate ‘TPTB’. They suck eggs big time. And people think, I’m just ranting. Behold! What’s happening now?

  • 20080307-Next Page

After reviewing the both the ‘faq.wordpress.com’ and ‘en.forums.wordpress.com’ supports regarding ‘Nextpage’ tags, I learned how this finally work. So there were five pages that were very long and I proceeded to place (by copying and pasting) the < !…nextpage… > tag after each ‘day’ of my post, which I combined. So this means my jump page labeled ‘Back to Top’ appears on the very last page.

I am slowly but surely learning how all the other features of WordPress.com. I noticed some members are so clueless and continue to post inquiries meant for their WordPress.org account. I reviewed the ‘Important Notices’ located on the top of the ‘en.forum.wordpress.com’ and those sticky posts are useful.
